Team Building Thyme

Team building activities play a vital role in fostering effective collaboration and enhancing productivity within organizations. At The Wild Thyme Company, we offer a unique opportunity for team building activities- a "chopped-style" cooking challenge, inspired by the famous culinary competition show. In our chopped-style team building activity, organizations are able to develop team building skills in a fun and engaging manner.

A chopped-style cooking activity encourages participants to work together as a team toward a common goal- in this case, we had each team develop a dish that utilizes all the ingredients in their baskets. Just like in a professional setting, individuals must communicate, cooperate, and coordinate their efforts to create a successful dish. This activity enables team members to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of their peers while fostering mutual respect and appreciation. By learning to rely on one another and leveraging their collective skills, participants experience firsthand the power of teamwork and collaboration.

A unique team building activity such as a chopped-style cooking activity encourages participants to think outside the box and unleash their creativity. With limited ingredients and time constraints, teams must brainstorm innovative solutions, experiment with flavors, and create unique dishes. This process stimulates participants to tap into their creative potential, break away from conventional thinking, and embrace new ideas. All teams are given the opportunity to brainstorm how they will utilize each ingredient, develop a menu, and come up with a team name- all within the allotted time period. By fostering a culture of creativity and innovation, organizations can benefit from fresh perspectives, novel approaches, and enhanced problem-solving abilities among their teams.

Just like in a kitchen, clear and efficient communication is the cornerstone of any successful team. While in the kitchen, our chefs encouraged participants to utilize kitchen lingo that is used to communicate with others in a professional kitchen environment. Participants must convey their ideas, instructions, and feedback effectively to ensure the smooth execution of the creating their dish. This helps individuals develop crucial communication skills such as active listening, concise expression, and the ability to adapt their communication style to diverse team members. These skills can be transferred to the workplace by improving communication, reducing conflicts, and increasing productivity.

Part of this team building activity presents teams with various challenges and obstacles that require quick thinking and problem-solving skills. Participants must analyze the situation, devise effective strategies, and adjust their plans accordingly. They learn to make informed decisions under pressure, adapt to unexpected circumstances, and troubleshoot issues as they arise. For example, the ingredients provided in each team’s basket may not be something they’re familiar with like Jackfruit or ingredients in the basket may not seem like they go together. The activity hones critical thinking abilities, encourages resourcefulness, and strengthens the ability to work efficiently and effectively in high-pressure situations. These problem-solving skills are directly applicable to real-world scenarios, enabling teams to address challenges with confidence and achieve optimal outcomes.

We put our team to the test and recently hosted our own team building event with the same chopped-style challenge. Each team had a mix of individuals who were part of different departments- we made sure to balance the amount of participating culinary team members with each team. Before we began, we prompted the teams to keep our High 5’s in mind as we worked through the challenge. For many team members, this was the most they interacted with others in a different department. Everybody impressed one another with many also learning new skills they didn’t realize they were capable of like dicing vegetables and roasting pepitas! Overall, this experience helped create new bonds within our team.

Our team building through a chopped-style cooking activity offers numerous benefits that are essential for fostering a cohesive and high-performing team. By promoting teamwork, communication, creativity, and problem-solving skills, this engaging activity enhances collaboration, builds stronger relationships among team members, and boosts overall productivity. As organizations recognize the significance of these skills in achieving success, incorporating such team-building activities becomes increasingly crucial. The cooking challenge serves as a metaphor for the challenges faced in the workplace, providing a unique opportunity for individuals to develop and refine essential skills that contribute to their personal and professional growth. And most of all, have fun doing it!
